Best Items to Flip in OSRS — Live Margins by Category

There is no permanent best item to flip in OSRS. Margins change with supply, demand, game updates and what other flippers are doing right now. What stays constant is which categories of items tend to produce reliable flips — and why each one behaves the way it does.

Runes — the best category for beginners

Runes trade in enormous volume because every Magic user in the game consumes them constantly. Nature runes, law runes, cosmic runes, chaos runes, death runes and blood runes all see daily volume in the hundreds of thousands. Margins per rune are small — typically 2 to 15 GP — but buy limits of 13,000 per 4 hours mean you can move serious capital per window.

Rune margins tighten when the game adds new methods of obtaining them (Runecrafting updates, spell book changes) and widen when demand spikes. They are the most beginner-friendly flip category: predictable behaviour, fast fills, no price cliff risk.

Potions — medium budget, consistent margin

Herblore potions degrade from 4-dose to 3-dose to 2-dose to 1-dose as they're used. This creates a natural spread between dose counts that experienced flippers exploit by decanting — buying lower-dose potions, combining them into 4-dose, and reselling. The Scanners tab in FlipForge finds these spreads automatically.

Common high-volume potions: Super Restore, Prayer Potion, Saradomin Brew, Extended Antifire, Ranging Potion, Attack/Strength/Defence super potions. These all see daily volume from players training Herblore and from PvM consumption.

Food — simple, reliable, beginner-friendly

Food trades constantly because every PvMer and PKer consumes it. Shark, anglerfish, dark crab, manta ray, karambwan — all high-volume. Margins are narrow but fills are near-instant because volume is so high. Food flipping suits low capital and teaches you what consistent volume looks like before graduating to higher-margin categories.

Ammunition — the volume king

Arrows and bolts trade in truly enormous volume. Every Ranged training session consumes hundreds or thousands. Dragon arrows, amethyst arrows, mithril bolts (unenchanted and enchanted), ruby bolts (e) — all see buy limits of 11,000 and genuine daily volume in the millions of units. Margins are often under 5 GP per unit but the volume makes it work.

High-value gear — for larger bankrolls

Items above 10 million GP — Twisted Bow, Scythe of Vitur, Tumeken's Shadow, Eldritch nightmare staff, Ancestral pieces — have very low buy limits (usually 1 or 2 per 4 hours) and wide margins. The GP per trade can be enormous but fills take longer and the market is less predictable. These are long-horizon investments, not quick flips.

Mid-tier gear sits in a better spot for active flippers: items between 500k and 10M with buy limits of 4 to 8. Bandos, Armadyl, Berserker rings, Abyssal whip, Dragon warhammer — all see genuine daily volume from players gearing up for bosses.
